This site, just south of Maaseik’s historic centre, is currently home to a nursery and primary school. The nursery school was built recently, between 2012-2013. The primary school is housed in an old school building from the 1960s. This building will be demolished to make way for a new one.
The old building is turned away from the city. One of the objectives of this project is to give the new school building a face towards the city. The new primary school building will also be linked to the kindergarten. Thus, it too will turn towards the city and its green walls.
The reorientation of the project site towards the north also provides other opportunities. On the one hand, the old rampart is a connection for slow traffic (no motorised traffic allowed) and, on the other hand, a green lung between the compact city centre and the school site.
In this project, we aim to better integrate the natural environment into the school environment to create a sustainable learning environment with more daylight, greenery and fresh air. This promotes the well-being, health and learning performance of both pupils and teachers.
