Gemeentelijke Basisschool Huizingen

The municipal primary school in Huizingen currently consists of two buildings: one for the primary school and administration, and one for the nursery school. The existing buildings are outdated and no longer meet current energy requirements. Therefore, the project calls for the construction of a single, compact new school building on the current elementary school site, which will house both the preschool and elementary school.

The new construction project will consist of three connected sections: the nursery school, the primary school and an administrative section. The shared functions, such as a multipurpose hall, the gyms, the canteens and the cross-class activities, will also be located centrally. Several spaces can also be used after school hours, for example for after-school childcare and other after-school activities.

By bringing the preschool and elementary school together on a single site, GBS Huizingen can function as a single elementary school with a clear and recognizable entrance. Although this increases the scale of the school, preserving its warm and friendly character remains a key principle of the design.

The outdoor facilities will also be completely renovated. The architects planned a child-friendly playground and a large bicycle shed and covered zones. By designing the playground on different levels, the various age groups each have their own space to play and relax.
